SUG ELECTION: I BELIEVE IN A FREE AND FAIR PROCESS — PROF. OMENUGHA

The Vice-Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, FNIPR, has reaffirmed her steadfast commitment to transparency, fairness, and due process in the conduct of student elections, stating that she firmly believes in a free and fair electoral process. The Vice-Chancellor made this assertion on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, while addressing students and staff at the SUG Election Situation Room during the university’s historic electronic voting exercise.

Speaking during her visit, Prof. Omenugha emphasized that fairness and transparency remain the bedrock of her administration, noting that the credibility of any election lies in the integrity of its process. She described the successful conduct of the e-voting exercise as a testament to the university’s resolve to uphold democratic principles while leveraging technology to promote accountability and inclusiveness among students.

The Vice-Chancellor further stated, “I believe in a free and fair process,” stressing that she had no personal interest in the outcome of the election. According to her, leadership positions should emerge through the will of the people and not through manipulation or undue influence. She reiterated that her administration remains committed to providing a level playing field where every candidate has an equal opportunity to contest and every student has the freedom to make a choice.

Prof. Omenugha also highlighted the importance of faith and divine guidance in leadership, noting that whenever she seeks direction, she turns to God in prayer. She explained that rather than attempting to impose individuals into positions, she entrusts such decisions to God, asking Him to bring the right people with whom she can work for the progress of the university. According to her, every event and outcome ultimately aligns with God’s purpose and design.

She therefore urged students to embrace the values of integrity, trust, and sportsmanship, irrespective of the election results. Her remarks further reinforced the credibility of the electoral process and underscored the university’s commitment to the principles of good governance. The successful conduct of the SUG election stands as yet another milestone in COOU’s digital transformation journey and its enduring commitment to the 3Vs mantra of Values, Viability, and Visibility.
