Soludo Walks the Talk: Approves 100% Implementation of ASUU Agreement for COOU Staff

The Visitor to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) and Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, has approved the 100% implementation of the ASUU agreement for university staff, marking a significant milestone in his administration’s commitment to staff welfare, improved working conditions and institutional development.

The approval, granted on Thursday, October 8, 2026, demonstrates the Governor’s resolve to translate promises into concrete action, particularly in addressing the welfare concerns of staff of the state-owned university. The development is expected to strengthen staff morale, promote industrial harmony and foster a more supportive environment for teaching, research and administrative service delivery.

The decision follows a commitment made by Governor Soludo during the university’s convocation ceremony on April 25, 2026, when he pledged to look into staff welfare, including a review of the salary structure. In furtherance of this commitment, the Governor mandated the University Governing Council, chaired by Prof. Peter Onwualu, to examine the matter and work towards addressing the concerns of university staff.

By approving the full implementation of the agreement, the Governor has demonstrated his administration’s determination to follow through on its commitments and prioritise the welfare of the workforce. The decision also underscores the importance of constructive engagement among the state government, university management and staff unions in advancing the interests of the university community.

For COOU, the approval represents an important step towards strengthening institutional stability and encouraging greater dedication to the university’s academic and administrative responsibilities. Improved staff welfare remains a critical component of building a university system capable of delivering quality education, advancing research and contributing meaningfully to the development of Anambra State.

The development further reinforces Governor Soludo’s commitment, as Visitor to the University, to building a stronger and more sustainable higher education system. By turning his convocation promise into action, the Governor underscores a leadership philosophy in which commitments are backed by decisive steps, demonstrating that meaningful governance is measured not merely by promises made but by promises fulfilled.
