COOU DEAN OF STUDENT AFFAIRS PARTICIPATES IN NUC MEETING ON STUDENT WELFARE, CAMPUS SAFETY AND UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION

The Dean of Student Affairs, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), participated in the One-Day Interactive Meeting of the National Universities Commission (NUC) with Deans of Student Affairs of Nigerian universities, held on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at the NUC Secretariat, Abuja. The meeting brought together university administrators and other stakeholders to deliberate on critical issues affecting student welfare, character development, graduate competence, campus security and the administration of student affairs in Nigeria’s university system. The programme featured a keynote address by the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Abdullahi Yusuf Ribadu, FCVSN, alongside discussions on strengthening students’ character, competence and career readiness, improving safeguarding policies to address gender-based violence and sexual harassment in universities, and rethinking hostel administration in response to the growing needs of Nigerian universities.

Other sessions examined campus safety as a prerequisite for quality learning, with particular attention to developing a national framework for student safety and safety management in Nigerian universities. The meeting also provided a platform for participants to exchange ideas, examine existing practices and consider practical approaches to improving the overall university experience.

Through presentations, interactive discussions and questions-and-answer sessions, the gathering emphasised the importance of effective student affairs administration in promoting safe learning environments, protecting students’ welfare and preparing graduates for the demands of society and the workplace. The participation of COOU’s Dean of Student Affairs bore witness to the university’s engagement with national conversations on higher education administration and its commitment to strengthening student support systems, institutional safety and responsible campus life.
