8th Governing Council Commemorates Inauguration with Economic Tree Planting Initiative in the Vice Chancellor's Orchard of Unity

Following the inauguration of the 8th Governing Council by the Governor of Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo on 11th June 2026, the newly constituted Council rounded off the first day of its 122nd Governing Council Meeting with an economic tree planting exercise at the Vice Chancellor's Orchard of Unity. The initiative symbolized the Council's commitment to growth, sustainability, and the enduring development of the University.

Leading the exercise was the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Prof. Peter Azikiwe Onwualu, who planted the first tree. He was followed by Prof. O. J. Ogbuagu and High Chief Dr. Christopher Ndubuisi (Ikenga Umuawulu), among other Council members. In a symbolic gesture, each tree was assigned a name, reflecting the significance of the occasion and the individual contributions of the planters to the University's future.

The tree planting exercise not only marked the formal commencement of the tenure of the 8th Governing Council but also reinforced the University's culture of unity, environmental responsibility, and legacy building. Situated within the Vice Chancellor's Orchard of Unity, the trees will stand as enduring reminders of a Council dedicated to nurturing both institutional excellence and sustainable development.
